India and its Hindu and
Buddhist stone carvings have been an influence on my work for over 20 years.
I have now visited India 6 times,
travelling in both the North
and the South. I am returning in December to visit Orissa in the North.
I received an Arts Council grant to make contacts in India and undertake visual research
into Kathekali and martial art movement forms (kalarippayttu) in 2000. I
exhibited in Trivandrum, Southern India 20th
December - 1st January and worked in Kovalam nearby for a 5 weeks. I went
back to the same residency in December 2002 and made further film and sculpture
I work with a South Indian dancer in England on projects of performance, workshops and Exhibitions.

During my stay I made many small sketches directly from the daily exercises. These drawings have been completed since returning from the sketches and the film made at the time. There will be larger more involved drawings onto unprimed canvas as the project progresses as well as some cement figure studies. |

I also made 3 hours worth of film of Kathakali - the extreme theatrical form which is performed in Kerala and has a close relationship with Kalarippayattu. I have begun to explore this as well which is a project in progress. |
